Rising Finnish star Rony Rex is set to serve up his scorching debut EP, F*cked It Up, for the on-trend Youth Control label on 30th June. It swiftly follows Rony’s debut single Sticky Fingers, also on Youth Control, that went straight to #1 on the iTunes Finnish Chart few days after it came out. Soon after that it hit #4 in the Spotify Viral Chart and went on to be a big tune for the likes of tastemakers Diplo, Felix Da Housecat and Don Diablo. As such, the world is now awaiting his every move, and finally they have want they’ve been waiting for: F*cked It Up, a three track EP featuring indie-pop outfit LCMDF that is sure to be his biggest record yet.
Rony Rex has come up the old school way by proving himself to be a vital DJ talent before even producing a tune. Now established around the world as a selector with great musical knowledge as well as dexterous DJ skills that find him plotting real musical journeys, he has his own high profile radio show Bassoradio, runs DJ workshops for RedBull, collaborates with Sennheiser to stream live sets from unusual places, and is a representative for Finland’s leading music production company. As such, he is very much a star in the ascendency and one whose studio skills are now wowing people as much as his rare ability in the booth.
Youth Control is label founded by TJH87 and has its finger very much on the pulse. By signing Rony Rex, they have proven that, and this second release from the star is set to take summer by storm. It features electronic pop band LCMDF, who have worked with major labels like Sony and Kitsuné, picked up heavy support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, the Guardian and Pitchfork as well as touring with the NME. They have worked with Dave ‘Switch’ Taylor of Major Lazer before now and have a fresh sound that fuses perfectly here with Rony’s unique style.
The fantastic first track here is F*cked It Up, a playful and colourful dance-pop bomb with crystal clear and soaring vocals from LCMDF. Repeating the title’s refrain in euphoric style as elastic beats and big synth stabs prop it up from below, this is an easy-to-sing summer anthem that will soundtrack many clubs and festivals in the months ahead, such is its charm and instant appeal.
Then comes the brilliant Burn, a deeper house track with well programmed drums bubbling and popping like champagne beneath sweeping synths and rugged bass. There is a sense of garage skip in the groove and when the summery vocals come in they add another layer of feel-good that really stands this one apart.
Last but not least is Donut, an explosive and restless house jam with more slick and smooth synths imbued with real soul. Filled with colour and energy, it explodes out of the speakers and into your affections as it ducks and dives dynamically from start to finish.
All three of these essential tunes prove Rony Rex is a producer with a great grasp of groove, plenty of character in his sound and the sort of vibes that sweep whole clubs up and away.
